"The Law of God" is more than a subject; it is the roadmap for the Orthodox life. This course offers a deep dive into the Old and New Testaments, as well as the fundamental moral and dogmatic teachings of the Church.
To ensure the highest level of clarity and integrity, our curriculum is built upon two pillars of Orthodox scholarship:
Primary Text: The Law of God by Protopriest Seraphim Slobodskoy. This classic text provides a structured, accessible overview of sacred history and the tenets of our faith.
Deep Commentary: We supplement our study with the world-renowned New Testament commentaries of Archbishop Averky (Taushev). His patristic insights provide a "Sonic Authority" to the scriptures, connecting ancient wisdom to modern life.
The Alphabet, Numbers, and Common Prayers
Church Slavonic can seem daunting at first glance, but it is a language of profound rhythm and beauty. While fluency in Russian is a helpful bridge, it is not a requirement; Slavonic stands as its own distinct liturgical art form.
In this session, we provide a foundational roadmap to the "Authority in Sound." We will cover:
The Alphabet: Mastering the characters and their specific liturgical phonetics.
The Numeric System: Understanding how Slavonic lettering is used to denote numbers within the services and how service books and rubrics are organized.
Common Prayers: Decoding the prayers chanted in every service, allowing you to move from listening to active participation.

The Foundation: We build upon the liturgical sections of Slobodskoy’s The Law of God for a clear grasp of the basics.
Technical Mastery: We utilize Archbishop Averky’s Liturgics, the standard textbook for seminarians, to explore the deep history and theological significance of the services.
The Blueprint: Students will learn to navigate the Tipikon (Ustav)—the "Eye of the Church." You will gain the skills to understand the rubrics, the cycles of time, and the intricate order that governs our daily and festal worship.
